Tips For Relieving Headaches During Pregnancy

Severe headaches can be common in the first trimester and commonly occur due to fluctuating hormone levels. However, headaches can be aggravated or worsened by other factors.

Keeping your blood sugar levels stable (refer to this article) is very important in both prevention and cure of headaches in pregnancy. Try to eat little and often.

Staying well hydrated during pregnancy is essential as the body requires increased fluid levels during pregnancy. Therefore, headaches may occur from dehydration.

Magnesium rich foods may help minimise headaches. Include soaked nuts and seeds (see our tips for soaking nuts here), dark leafy greens, broccoli and raw cacao in your diet. Supplementing with magnesium and epsom salt baths may also bring relief.

Changing positions too quickly i.e. going from lying to standing, can cause a rapid change in blood pressure and may aggravate or cause headaches.

Massage by a qualified masseuse can help relieve headaches. Or gently massage your temple and the area from the bridge of your nose across to the ends of your eyebrows with almond oil.

Regular yoga practice, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbalism and reflexology can also be supportive.

*Headache tablets, aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen (Advil, Aleve and generic brands) should not be taken during pregnancy. Consult your health care practitioner before taking over the counter medication. Contact your health care provider if you experience severe, persistent headaches as it may be related to high blood pressure.
