Week 17: Your baby is the size of an onion
This week, your baby’s fat stores begin to form which will help regulate its metabolism and heat production. Adipose, or fat tissue, will help keep your baby warm and snug once he/she is born. The umbilical cord is thickening and strengthening, supplying nutrients and oxygen to your baby and removing carbon dioxide and waste materials for you to excrete.
Essential Nutrients this Week: Calcium, Vitamin D, Magnesium, Protein, Iron
Food of the Week: Organic Chicken
Chicken is one of the most important products to purchase organic while pregnant. Organic chicken does not contain the toxic hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides and growth promotants that commercially raised birds do. A 100g roasted chicken breast has 35g of protein and 1.2mg of iron and is also an excellent source of B vitamins, phosphorus, potassium, zinc and niacin. Chicken is a ‘complete protein’, meaning it contains all the essential amino acids (building blocks for muscle) we need to get from our pregnancy diet.
